Ladies of Oakland Meetings

April 15th-Don Corrigan-Editor-in-Chief of the Times-Don will review and sign copies of his book "Show Me...Natural Wonders."

May 20th-Nancy Ulrich-Nancy will show a trunk full of antique finery.

June 17th-Salad Luncheon-Bring salads or finger food.  Pat Treacy and Pat Lavanchy will present "Name that Tune".  Lots of laughs, fun and prizes.

July 15th-Sisters of St. Joseph-Carondelet-Sister Kate Fillia will present a very enjoyable program on the History On The Sisters of St. Joseph and their work in Carondelet.

August 19th-Gus' Pretzels-Sue will give us a short history on Gus's Pretzel's

September 16th-The Angel Store-Tyann Jarvis will tell us about angels and her experience of operating The Angel Store.

October 21st-Kenrick's Meat Market-Tim Weinmann will speak about the history of Kenrick's in Affton.

November 18th-Barb Mannes-Barb Mannes will give a book review on "Gifts of Christmas" To put us in the Holiday Spirit.

Sunday, April 20, 2008 - Rita De Filio with display a 100 year old Clock, that was her grandparents.

Sunday, May 18, 2008 - Erna Sinovcic will display her mother's Bench Wringer.  Plus a copy of a Sears-Roebuck catalog from 1897, containing a picture of a new Bench Wringer for sale.

Sunday, June 15, 2008 - Bernice Guerke will display her collection of "Katcina" dolls.  The "Katcina" dolls are made by the Hopi Indians who live in the southwestern part of the United States.  From it, and from the design on its clothes, the Hopi children
can learn about the ancient spirits of the tribe.    

Sunday, July 20, 2008 - Ron Brockmeyer will display legal paper certificates from his great-grandfather and great-grandmother.  Birth confirmations in German 1823 and 1832, Citizenship documents from 1851, Surveyors tract of property at Carroll and Columbus 1879, building material with prices from 1879 and Funeral Home price lists from 1897 for his great-grandfather and 1906 for his great-grandmother.
              
Sunday, August 17, 2008 - Charlie Brown will display his great-grandfather's Horse Whip.  That was used from 1865 to 1920 to practice veterinarian medicine in Edwardsville, Kansas.

Sunday, September 21, 2008 - Shirley Eckert will display her collection of "Teddy Bears" from different locations in the United States.

Sunday June 17th--Clinton and Jean McDaniel-Clinton and Jean will display a grandfather's memorabilia from the Spanish-American War.

Sunday July 15th-Don and Joan Harbaugh-Don and Joan will display a grandfather's memorabilia from the Spanish American War.

Sunday August 19th--Cyndie Ahrens-Cyndie will display her collection of Old Paris Porcelain

Sunday September 16th-Rosemary Logan-Rosemary will display her family collection of china and flatware.

"Don't miss our members sharing"  Hours:2-4pm. Members:$1.00, Guests $5.00  Docents conducts tour, and Hostess serves refreshments.

 

       AFFTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY QUARTERLY MEETINGS FOR 2008

April 27, 2008 - Victoria Gray will come dressed in Victorian attire and speak of such.  Along with a vignette of items she has designed and will speak on like clothing during the Victorian time period.   


July 27, 2008 - Donna and Earl Ross will give a performance on "Land and Locomotives: Forces That Shaped Missouri in the Nineteenth Century".  The riches of the heartland-salt from salt springs, timber for building, lead for bullets and fertile land for farming brought folks flooding into Missouri in the nineteenth century.  What did they crave most of all?  Land.  In the years after the Civil War, railroads crossed the land to bring both prosperity and poverty.
 
 
October 26, 2008 - Carolyn Miller will display the necessary clothing that a Victorian lady or gentleman would wear in public.  Take a walk down memory lane through the ELEGANT FASHIONS OF THE PAST.  Her programs encourage audience participation by featuring ladies and gentlemen from the audience dressed in the authentic, original vintage clothing…complete with the proper accessories.
